Boy, 11, shot dead in horror road rage attack on way to school
A child traveling to school with his family was shot and killed during a road–rage incident Friday morning, police said.
The boy, 11, was fatally shot at around 7.30am while riding with his stepfather in an SUV on the outskirts of Las Vegas – in Henderson, Nevada.
Tyler Matthew Johns, 22, was accused of firing one fatal shot after becoming embroiled in what Henderson police called a ‘road-rage incident.’
The altercation began after both vehicles started ‘jockeying for positions, trying to pass each other on the congested freeway,’ according to Henderson police chief Reggie Rader.
He said: ‘I just want to remind everybody. that we lost a life today that we didn’t have to lose. An 11–year–old was on his way to school and this senseless act took his life.’
Police said both cars got into a verbal exchange and rolled their respective windows down.
At that point, Johns allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired into the back seat of the other vehicle, killing the sitting boy.

Henderson police accused Johns of shooting and and killing an 11-year-old boy Friday morning in what was described as a ‘road–rage incident’

Henderson police chief Reggie Rader said the ‘senseless act’ was avoidable and urged locals to ‘do better’ because ‘we can’t allow this to continue to happen’
Rader said: ‘I would rather you be stuck in traffic and late for your destination than have to go to a funeral for a loved one, or potentially spend the rest of your life in prison.
‘We have to do better as a city, we have to do better as a community. We have to do better as human beings, because we can’t allow this to continue to happen.’
The stepfather then ‘rammed’ John’s four–door sedan, bringing both of their cars to a halt in the middle of the road and prompting another ‘heated exchange.’
This second dispute was spotted by a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer who was driving on the freeway, police said.
The police officer arrested Johns at the scene of the crime. His gun was also recovered.
Johns was charged with open murder, discharging a gun at or into a vehicle and discharging a gun within a vehicle in a prohibited area, police records showed.
The child was treated by the Henderson Fire Department and then rushed to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, where he died.

The fatal shooting happened around 7.30am in the westbound lanes of the 215 Beltway near Gibson Road in Henderson, Nevada

The Henderson Police Department said Johns was the only person in his car at the time of the incident on Friday morning

Police said the dispute stated when both drivers started ‘jockeying for positions’ on a ‘congested’ beltway
Rader said: ‘Our roadways can get congested and we’re doing improvement projects to try to ease that burden, but what I need is everybody to have an appreciation for the sanctity of life.’
He added: ‘My ask, my plea of the community – especially as we enter these holiday seasons – is to slow down.
‘You will eventually get there and let’s get there safely.’
Police said Johns was the only person in his car and that there was no information that ‘any impairment played a factor’ in the fatal shooting.
Johns was booked into jail Friday, records showed.
He appeared virtually in court on Saturday morning and was denied bail, according to KLAS.
