Nancy Mace seeks to rename Black Lives Matter Plaza after Charlie Kirk to end ‘mass race hysteria’
Conservative firebrand Congresswoman Nancy Mace is pushing to rename a popular Washington, DC street after the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Following Kirk’s assassination in September many GOP lawmakers have introduced bills to commemorate the late father of two’s life and legacy.
On Wednesday, Mace introduced a bill that would designate what was formerly Black Lives Matter Plaza as ‘Charlie Kirk Freedom of Speech Plaza.’
After President Donald Trump took office earlier this year, workers removed the massive ‘Black Lives Matter’ slogan painted on 16th St., which is just a block north of the White House.
Now that the canvass has been cleared, the South Carolina Republican believes it should serve as a type of Kirk memorial.
‘Three months ago, we lost a champion of free speech and a voice for millions of young Americans,’ Mace said in a statement.
‘Charlie Kirk’s assassination was an attack not just on one man, but on the fundamental American principle declaring every citizen has the right to speak freely and engage in civic discourse,’ she continued. ‘By designating this plaza in the heart of our nation’s capital, we ensure Charlie’s legacy and his unwavering commitment to the First Amendment will never be forgotten.’
Kirk went to what was previously known as BLM Plaza and called for an end to ‘mass race hysteria,’ the congresswoman noted in a press release.

Most Republicans described the old BLM Plaza as a symbol of division and chaos following George Floyd’s 2020 death.
It became a meeting point during that year and many protests and political marches started or ended at BLM Plaza during that tenuous summer.
Mace’s bill to honor Kirk and his legacy is just one of several pieces of legislation proposed in his name.
Both the House and Senate passed bills to honor Kirk’s life shortly after he was assassinated while speaking at a Utah college campus.
Florida Senator Rick Scott pushed a proposal in October to rename a street close to the White House ‘Charlie Kirk Way.’
And GOP Congressmen August Pfluger and Abe Hamadeh introduced a bill in September to mint commemorative silver dollar coins featuring Kirk’s likeness.
Trump awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Erika Kirk, Charlie’s widow, in October.
It is unclear whether Mace’s bill to rename BLM Plaza after Kirk will get a vote in the House or Senate.
Even if it does, it seems unlikely that it will pass given the bill would need Democratic support to make it out of the Senate.
