One killed and two injured after gunman opens fire at Kentucky State University
One person has died after a gunman opened fire at Kentucky State University.
Horror unfolded around 3.30pm Tuesday when the Frankfort Police Department responded to the campus over an ‘active aggressor.’
The unidentified suspect was taken into custody around 3.40pm, police said.
Another person was left critically injured, but is in stable condition, authorities stated.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear took to X to confirm the shooting and asked the public to send well wishes to those impacted by the senseless incident.
‘The shooting that took place today at Kentucky State University appears to be an isolated incident – not a mass shooting,’ Beshear said.
‘The suspect has been arrested, and there is no ongoing threat. Two individuals were critically injured, and I am sad to share that one has now passed away.’
He continued: ‘Violence has no place in our commonwealth or country. Let’s please pray for the families affected and for our KSU students. Let’s also pray for a world where these things don’t happen. Thank you to our brave law enforcement who acted quickly to protect our people.’

It is unclear what led to the shooting.
Nearly 2,200 students attend the southern school and roughly 450 faculty and staff members work there.
The school is just 10 days away from its winter break, which starts on December 19 and goes through January 2, 2026.
Kentucky State University is a Historically Black University (HBCU), and is the only public one in the state.
Lawmakers authorized the school’s creation in 1886.
