Plane crashes into traffic during emergency landing on Florida Interstate 95 near Orlando

A small multi-engine aircraft slammed into traffic on a major Florida highway on Monday night.

The Beechcraft 55 plane was attempting an emergency landing when it smashed into a Toyota Camry on Interstate 95 near Orlando. The pilot had reported engine problems moments earlier.

The crash sent debris flying across the road and left the sedan crushed near the median barrier.

Officials said the dramatic crash unfolded along one of the most heavily traveled stretches between Orlando and Cape Canaveral, forcing troopers to shut down lanes as emergency crews rushed in.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the Camry’s driver, a 57-year-old woman, was behind the wheel when the aircraft clipped her vehicle.

She was taken to Viera Hospital with what troopers described as minor injuries, a remarkable outcome given the scale of destruction captured in images from the scene.

The plane could be seen sprawled across a couple of lanes with debris littering the southbound lanes.

Incredibly, the 27-year-old pilot and their passenger walked away unhurt.

On board the plane were a 27-year-old pilot from Orlando and a 27-year-old passenger from Temple Terrace.

Both declined to be taken to hospital, according to officials.

The crash caused long traffic jams in both directions as emergency services attended the scene and worked to clear the wreckage.

What caused the plane to crash land on the highway remains a mystery.

Authorities said the pilot had been attempting an emergency landing but did not specify the mechanical or operational failure that triggered the descent.

FHP said the FAA will investigate the incident and launch full review into what caused the plane to drop onto I-95 during evening rush hour traffic.

The crash was the second aviation emergency in Central Florida on Monday.

Only hours earlier, another small plane made a surprise landing on a roadway in DeLand, not far from DeLand High School.

In that incident, occurring at around 2pm, two people aboard were hurt and taken to the hospital, officials said.
