Posh California coast town cancels annual Christmas parade over fear of ICE raids
A wealthy California coastal town has canceled its annual Christmas parade amid community fears that the event could trigger a potential ICE raid.
On Tuesday, it was revealed that Santa Barbara’s beloved Milpas Street Holiday Parade would be canceled this year, ending a tradition that has been a cultural cornerstone of the town’s Eastside for over 70 years.
The move came after the Santa Barbara Eastside Society spent weeks consulting with families, volunteers, local leaders and immigrant-rights partners who warned that a large gathering could heighten community vulnerability.
Alarm bells particularly rang over the possibility that the longstanding event could attract unwanted attention from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.
‘Many have reminded us that although ICE raids may no longer dominate daily headlines, the threat to our Latino families documented or undocumented remains very real,’ the society wrote in a news release.
‘The presence of immigration enforcement in our region, the fear it generates and the uncertainty families continue to face are real, immediate and deeply felt,’ they added.
‘After thoughtful deliberation, we believe that pausing the parade is the most compassionate and responsible path.’
Over the summer, six months after assuming office, President Donald Trump ordered ICE to increase deportation efforts in California, particularly in the Los Angeles area.

Tens of thousands took to the streets in response, overwhelming local police and paralyzing major city highways.
Disturbing incidents have since surfaced nationwide, such as the case of 33-year-old Katie Paul, a British mother taken into custody by ICE agents in San Diego for allegedly overstaying her visa.
Paul arrived at the USCIS office for a routine green card appointment only to be handcuffed and arrested immediately, all while in full view of her six-month-old baby and American husband.
Santa Barbara has not been spared, with ICE agents reportedly active near Santa Barbara City College, UC Santa Barbara and Franklin Elementary School as recently as October, according to Santa Barbara Independent.
From January through October, over 600 immigration-related arrests took place on the Central Coast, including more than 100 in Santa Barbara County, according to the outlet.
Local immigrant advocacy group 805UndocuFund reported that Santa Barbara County ranks as the second hardest-hit area in the nonprofit’s coverage region for federal enforcement operations, behind only Santa Maria.
The Milpas Street Holiday Parade has attracted thousands every December for decades, with school groups and community organizations filling the streets and turning it into a landmark event.
‘The Milpas Street Holiday Parade has been a space of joy, unity and cultural pride, an event where every family, regardless of status, could gather safely and celebrate the rich spirit of Santa Barbara’s Eastside,’ the society wrote.

But officials said that many of these longtime participants have been feeling increasingly nervous and vulnerable for months, and now ‘feel unsafe’ attending such a public gathering.
‘To move forward without honoring those concerns would contradict the very values that this parade was built upon,’ they wrote. ‘Our priority is, and always has been, the wellbeing, dignity and safety of our community.’
The parade was canceled ‘with heavy hearts and profound respect,’ organizers said, honoring the neighbors and families who keep the tradition alive year after year.
‘As we look toward the future, we remain committed to rebuilding this celebration in a way that reflects the strength and resilience of our neighborhood,’ the announcement read.
They expressed hope that the 2026 holiday parade will come back as an inclusive and uplifting event for local residents, instead of one shadowed by unease.
‘This decision is not easy,’ the local leaders wrote. ‘But is is rooted in care, solidarity and an unwavering commitment to stand with our community during uncertain times.’
This marks California’s most recent in a series of event cancellations driven by immigration enforcement actions this year, according to Noozhawk.
Among the cancellations were Santa Barbara’s Old Spanish Days Fiesta celebrations, the Boys & Girls Club’s Fiesta Carnival de Los Niños and Santa Barbara City College, which pulled out of a Fiesta parade.

A recent report from the nonpartisan research firm Public Policy Institute of California found that a staggering 71 percent of state voters disapprove of ICE’s performance

A CNN exit poll last month showed that three-quarters of Californians are unhappy with the state of the nation, and six in ten believe the Trump administration has gone too far on immigration enforcement
In October, the Santa Barbara Museum of Contemporary Art canceled its annual Calenda – a festive downtown procession showcasing traditional music and dance.
According to a new poll by Goodwin Simon Strategic Research, ICE agents have arrested more than 160,608 noncitizens nationwide with criminal convictions or pending charges since Trump’s inauguration.
The report, published Thursday, revealed that Californians overwhelmingly support ensuring that immigrants facing deportation receive due process, including those with criminal records.
State voters’ opposition to mass deportations was clear, with 62 percent agreeing that sanctuary rules have too many exceptions and that local and state officers often act as deportation agents.
A poll released last week by UC Berkeley’s Possibility Lab found that one-third of Latino voters who supported Trump now regret their choice.
